How To Turn Your Photographs Into a Hand-drawn Sketch

In this tutorial you will learn how to quickly and easily convert your photographs into a hand-drawn sketch using Adobe Photoshop.

You Will Need

  • Adobe Photoshop

Step 1: Duplicate Your Background Layer

Create a duplicate of your background layer by holding down the Command/Control key and pressing the letter J.

Step 2: Desaturate the Layer

Desaturate this new layer by holding down the Shift + Command/Control and the letter U.

Step 3: Create Another Duplicate, Invert and Blend.

Duplicate this layer (see step 1) and invert it by holding down Command/Control and pressing the letter i. Change the blend mode of the new layer to Color Dodge.

When you change the blend mode your canvas should change to solid white (some traces of black and/or grey are ok).

Step 4: Apply a Blur

Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Now you have the ability to change the look of your sketch. Dragging the blur amount to the left will create more of a pencil-like drawing, while dragging it to the right will create more of a charcoal-like effect. Press OK.

I've done this a couple times, but each time I do it, I have to try to remember what I did last time. I'm going to keep this link in my records–a great reference tool!
