How To Smooth Skintones in Adobe Photoshop CS3

In this tutorial you will learn how to quickly and easily smooth skintones in Photoshop using Smart Filters and masking techniques.

You Will Need

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3

Step 1: Convert your Background

Go to the Layers panel and right click on your background layer (ctrl+click on Mac) and choose Convert To Smart Object.

Step 2: Apply Surface Blur

Go to Filter>Blur>Surface Blur. Change your Radius and Threshold to 15. Click OK.

Step 3: Invert the Filter Mask

Click on the Smart Filter Mask and invert it by pressing Command/Control and the letter i. This will hide the effects of the blur and turn your mask black.

Step 4: Set Brush Options

Grab the* Brush Tool. In the options bar make sure the *Brush Mode is Normal and the Opacity is set to 50%.

Before you begin using the brush, make sure you are working on the Smart Filter Mask. You’ll know that you have it selected if you see a small bounding box around it.

Step 5: Paint on the Mask

Change your Foreground Color to White and begin brushing in the areas of skin that you want to smooth out. Be careful to avoid areas with defined lines (eyes, mouth, hair, etc.).

Be sure to use a soft edge brush to avoid harsh lines when you start painting in the smooth areas.
