How To Play Bagpipes

If you would like to impress the ladies with your ability to simultaneously squeeze, finger, and blow, then playing the bagpipes may be for you.

You Will Need

  • A lot of hot air
  • bagpipes
  • A kilt (optional)

Step 1: Hold the bagpipes properly

Place the bag under your arm. Put the blowstick in your mouth. Place the drones over your shoulder and hold the chanter with both hands.

Step 2: Inflate the bag

Blow air into the blowstick in order to inflate the bag with air.

Pace yourself. There is no need to overdo the blowing. Make sure you do not hyperventilate and pass out.

Step 3: Make sounds

Once the bag is inflated, squeeze the bag and wiggle your fingers. It doesn’t really need to sound like a song, these are bagpipes, not a guitar.

The ability to read sheet music may be helpful at this point. See ‘How to read sheet music’.

Did you know? The bagpipes have been played for over 2,000 years. Most experts say that it takes at least seven years to master the instrument. But if you keep practicing, your mastery will put you in an elite group of musicians.
