Teaching a dog how to sit is a very simple process once you know the proper steps involved.
This usually is the first trick a dog should learn. After learning how to sit, tricks like shaking, laying down, rolling over, etc. can be taught to the dog.
In order to train a dog, you must first figure out how to reward your dog. If you do not reward your dog while teaching him or her a trick, your dog will lose patience and will not learn the trick.
Some dogs will need treats:

Some dogs just need to be praised.
Get your dog standing and paying attention.
Gently place your hand on your dog’s rear end and push it down
Say “sit” firmly and clearly so your dog can associate the command with the action of sitting.
After making your dog sit you may need to give him or her a treat in order to keep his or her attention.
This process must be repeated many times. Eventually your dog will understand what he or she is supposed to be doing, so you should occasionally just try the command and see if your dog responds. Once your dog appears to have learned the trick, make sure you practice it it throughout the next few days to make sure your dog remembers the trick.
Another technique is to get your dog standing, hold a treat right above your dog’s nose so that he or she must sit in order to reach it, say “sit” as soon as your dog’s rear end hits the floor and praise your dog (let your dog have the well deserved treat if he or she was not able to reach it after sitting).
I recommend the first way. Much easier.
