How To Ride a Unicycle

Everyone thinks that ridding a unicycle is impossible but with these simple steps you can turn the impossible to incredible.

You Will Need

  • A unicycle
  • a sense of balance
  • Perseverance and determination
  • time
  • a stationary object or friend (optional)

When riding a unicycle for the first time a fall or bale is guaranteed. Always wear a helmet and safety gear.

Step 1: Position the unicycle.

Position the unicycle in front of you the wheel pointing straight forward. If your unicycle has a handle on the seat make sure that is in the front.

Step 2: position the wheel.

position the wheel so that one of the peddles is pointing towards 5 o’clock.

If your right leg is your dominate leg the position the left peddle at 5 o’clock. If your left leg is your dominate leg then position the right peddle at 5 o’clock.

Step 3: unwrinkle your pants.

unwrnkle your pants by pulling them up and tug gently on the legs. This will remove any creases in the pants that pinch between you legs and seat causing discomfort which will force you to dismount.

Step 4: position the seat.

Position the seat in between your legs and all the way up to your crotch. tug on your pant legs to remove any creases that may have been made in the process.

Step 5: place your corresponding foot on the lower peddle.

Place your corresponding foot on the lower peddle and apply steady pressure. If the lower peddle is the left peddle then put your left foot on it and vis versa.

Step 6: Mount the unicycle.

Mount the unicycle by placing your remaining foot on the remaining peddle. Concentrate on balancing and if your unicycle seat has a handle DO NOT hold on to it. In stead use both hands to help balance.

If you are having problems getting started hold onto a solid object such as a car, fence, or garbage can. If you have a friend available ask your friend to help you, they will be able to put their foot in front of the wheel so it does not roll and walk with you.

Step 7: peddle

peddle the unicycle just like a bike. Remember that the unicycle can’t coast so to break all you have to do is stop peddling.

Step 8: practice

spend some time every day practicing riding. you will slowly see your self progress and become better and better. It will take the average person 2-6 weeks to learn to ride a unicycle so don’t worry if you don’t get it right away. Also do not worry about falling, everyone falls but not everyone can ride a unicycle.

A unicycle and a monocycle are both a vehicles that have only one wheel. The difference between the two is that with a unicycle the rider is above the wheel and with a monocycle the rider is inside the center of the wheel.
