How To Be a More Efficient Mac User

Love your Mac but missing out on the real world? Save time when working on your Mac with these handy tips and tricks

You Will Need

  • Apple Mac computer
  • Mac OS X Leopard

Step 1: Move windows in the background

Hold down command (⌘) and click anywhere except the window title before dragging to move that window without bringing it to the front.

Step 2: View a window's path

Hold down command (⌘) and click on a window’s document’s window title to see the file’s path.

Try it in Safari, this will show the browsing history for the selected tab or window

Step 3: Close all windows for an application

Hold down option (alt) when clicking a window’s close icon to close all windows for that application – don’t worry it will still ask you to save.

Try it with other buttons: Option and minimize (the yellow minus sign) minimizes all windows. Option and maximize (the green plus sign) maximizes all windows.

Step 4: Manage your files

When arranging your files in the Finder, Mac OS X moves it if the destination is on the same ‘disk’ and copies it if the destination is different. To force a move or a copy do the following: To force a move, hold down command (⌘) whilst dragging your file; to make a copy; hold down option (alt) whilst dragging (a green ’+’ should appear).

Hold down command (⌘) and option to make an alias.

The command sign (⌘) is known as the Saint John’s Arms and used on Swedish (and other countries’) maps to mark campgrounds or places of historical interest.
