How To Wash Your Windows Like a Pro (Non-Toxic Too!)

The best part of spring cleaning is wiping away the film of winter and unveiling the brisk feel of spring. Nothing is more emblematic of this transition than window washing. Before you break out the toxic window cleaner, let’s talk over a safer way to wash your windows.

You Will Need

  • 2 spray bottles
  • 24 oz. organic vinegar
  • 32 oz. water
  • 8 oz. water
  • organic dish detergent
  • 1 flour sack cloth

Step 1: Prepare your solutions

Combine 32 ounces of water with four to five drops of organic dish detergent in a spray bottle. Also, prepare a mixture of three parts vinegar to one part water for the second spray bottle.

Step 2: Mist the window with the dish detergent mixture

This mixture breaks down the grease that has accumulated on the windows – very helpful for kitchen windows.

Step 3: Immediately spray the vinegar mixture

Vinegar is a solvent and it will break down the soap from the first step so you’re not leaving a soap residue. However, on its own, it won’t break down the grease.

Step 4: Buff the window dry using a flour sack cloth

These flour sack cloths can be used over and over again so they make an obvious alternative to disposable wipes or cloths. If you can’t find flour sack cloths, use a different lint-free cloth.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, each year, there are more than 164,000 emergency room-treated injuries in the U.S. relating to ladders. We recommend extreme caution when washing the exterior of windows that are higher than the ground floor.
