How To Add Steps and Chapters To Howcast Videos

Adding steps and chapters—such as tips, warnings, and facts—makes your video more organized and lets you better tell your story. Give your video some structure and make your instructions crystal clear to all!

You Will Need

  • A Howcast account
  • A video to edit

Step 1: Navigate to your video

You can either insert steps and chapters when you first upload your video (after it has finished processing) or you can go back and add them after the fact. To edit a video already uploaded, visit the “My Account” page and click the “Videos” tab under “My Stuff.”

Step 2: Enter time codes

Click “Add” under the “Instructions” heading to create the steps and chapters necessary for your video. Begin by entering the time code that corresponds to each step or chapter.

To find the time codes, click “Open the video in a new window” to consult it as you go. The time code for your video is located in the little window on the bottom left of the pop-up player.

Step 3: Title and describe steps

To the right of the time code, enter a very short title for each step—just a few words max. Then, in the text box below, write out a detailed description of the step.

Keep it short—if an action is taking too long to describe, consider breaking it into multiple steps. You only have 350 characters for each step.

Step 4: Insert a tip or warning

If you need, you can insert a helpful tip or warning by adding a step and changing the drop-down menu on the right from “Step” to “Tip” or “Warning.”

Step 5: Add a fact

To finish up, add a fact at the end—preferably something related to your video that’s unusual or surprising.

Step 6: Save your work

If you’re editing a video that you’ve already uploaded, click “Save” to confirm your changes. If you’re in the middle of uploading your video for the first time, go on to the next section—the credits. Soon people will be enjoying your fabulous new video!

When you’re watching a Howcast video with steps and chapters, you can click on the “View All Steps” link to see the corresponding text in a separate window.
