How To Upload a Video To Howcast

Uploading a video to Howcast is fast, easy, and a great way to show the world what you know!

You Will Need

  • A Howcast account
  • A video on your computer

Step 1: Visit the upload page

From the Howcast homepage, click the light blue “Upload” button on the upper right.

Step 2: Select a video

Click “Browse” to select the video file you want to upload.

Howcast supports most video formats, though for the best quality we recommend uploading a QuickTime file (.mov) encoded with the H.264 codec. Files must be smaller than 100 megabytes.

Step 3: Enter basic information

Enter relevant basic information about your video, such as its title, a brief description, the categories to which it belongs, any tags you want associated with it, and whether its content is suitable for all ages. This module does have a 275 character limitation.

Step 4: Upload your video

Click “Upload.”

Step 5: Add items

As the video uploads, add the items under “You Will Need” that are necessary to complete the task. Click “Add” until everything—necessary and optional—is listed on the page.

Step 6: Enter steps and chapters

Click “Add” under the “Instructions” heading and enter steps and chapters (such as tips, warnings, and facts) for your video. Enter a time code for when you want each step or chapter to appear. Remember, videos usually end with a fun final fact.

If you’re unsure of the time codes, click “Open the video in a new window” to consult it as you go.

Step 7: Give credit

Once you’re done, give credit where it’s due. In the credits section, list the role, display name, and Howcast username of anyone who worked on the film.

Step 8: Click next

Click “Next.” Wait for your video to finish uploading, if it hasn’t already.

Step 9: Keep tweaking it

Your video is now on Howcast! You can edit, delete, or share it by visiting the “My Account” page and clicking the “Videos” tab under “My Stuff.” There, you can also change the video thumbnails and privacy settings. Once you’re done, it’s time to make and upload another!

Howcast was founded by veterans of YouTube and Google.
