Description First let me introduce myself. My name is David Handley. I am a qualified teacher with over 39 years mathematics teaching experience. I was Head of Mathematics at the Fitzwimarc School, Rayleigh, Essex, UK for over twenty years. Let me explain why I started making mathematics videos. Additional Mathematics at GCSE level was one of the last summer examinations, giving time for revision before the exam. However early in the 1990’s the examination was moved to the start of the examination period. Teaching all topics required in one year for this examination was always a challenge and then to include a period of revision, almost impossible. So idea of revision mathematics videos was born. Students were encouraged to borrow the videos, for home viewing, as topics were taught and for revision nearer to the exam. Students found the videos very helpful for both learning and revision. I went on to make over sixty mathematics revision videos, covering different levels of mathematics, including GCSE Foundation, Intermediate, Higher and Additional levels for the students at my school to borrow for home viewing. The videos were not professional studio productions with clever animation and groovy music. In the videos my hands could be seen writing and my voice heard explaining the mathematics. Some of the videos covered specific topics which students had difficulty with and in others I worked through past examination papers. The videos may well have lacked glitz but there is no doubt that they helped the students at my school to do well in their Mathematics examinations. My departments results were always "well above the national average" (UK Government PANDA report comment) and I believe my videos were one of the reasons for this success. I am now retired, so, following the success of the videos in school I spend my “spare” time planning, preparing and making mathematics DVD’s which are available to purchase on my web site www.mathstutor.biz. From the available DVD’s I have selected a number of video clips and have posted on the internet for anyone to view. I hope you will view my clips and that you find them of value. When viewing the video clips, some may feel I progress too slowly. For others progress could be too quick. The aim is that every viewer should understand the procedure being explained and I feel that this will be the case, especially with the facility to re-run any clip not understood at the first viewing.
