Step 2: Choose hooks

Choose hooks according to the composition of your walls and how much weight you want them to hold. Ask at your hardware store for advice or research them online.

Step 3: Locate a stud

If your walls are drywall, you’ll need to locate a stud, or the frame behind the drywall. You can use a stud finder, or you can simply tap on the wall and determine which points sound the least “hollow.”

Step 4: Drill a hole

Drill a hole into the wall (or stud) that’s equal to the depth of your hook’s screw.

Make sure you use the correct size drill bit. You’ll want to use one that’s slightly smaller than the screw for drywall, and slightly larger than the screw for everything else.

Step 5: Hammer in the hook

If you have a hook that can be hammered, simply hammer it into the hole you just drilled.
