Forget about those pricey dandruff shampoos. There are many natural ways to foil the flakes.

You Will Need

  • Lemons or limes
  • Olive oil
  • Ginger
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Aloe vera
  • Tea tree oil
  • Mouthwash
  • Plain yogurt
  • Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids
  • Crushed rosemary leaves (optional)
  • Rosemary oil (optional)

Step 1: Rinse with lemon or lime juice

After shampooing, use one teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice in the final rinse.

Step 2: Give yourself an oil treatment

Give yourself a hot-oil treatment. Heat two ounces of olive oil combined with two teaspoons of grated ginger. When the mixture cools, apply to the scalp with cotton balls. Leave on for 15 minutes, then shampoo.

Crushed rosemary leaves can be used in place of the ginger, and rosemary oil can replace the olive oil.

Step 3: Use apple cider vinegar

Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, apply to the scalp with cotton balls, and let it dry before shampooing.

Step 4: Treat it overnight

Treat dandruff overnight by applying the gel of an aloe vera plant to your scalp before you go to bed. Or, as an alternative, use tea tree oil. Shampoo out the next morning.

Step 5: Beat it with mouthwash

Shampoo your hair as usual; rinse; rub a cupful of antiseptic mouthwash into the scalp; and rinse again.

If you use conditioner, just add the cupful of mouthwash to the conditioning process.

Step 6: Bathe hair in yogurt

After shampooing and rinsing, work one cup of plain yogurt into the scalp. Wait 15 minutes, then lightly shampoo and rinse again.

Step 7: Stem flakes with diet

Try a dietary approach. Eat more foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as almonds, hazelnuts, halibut, and salmon. They’ll prevent the scalp from getting dry and flaking.

Fifty percent of the human population has dandruff.
