Think of this as a science project that illustrates how a liquid can transform into a fatty solid. A delicious science project that requires a lot of elbow grease.

You Will Need

  • 2 c. heavy cream
  • A glass jar with a lid
  • 1 clean glass marble
  • A large mesh strainer
  • A bowl
  • Clean hands or a spoon
  • Parchment paper or a butter bowl
  • And a refrigerator
  • 1⁄2 tsp. salt
  • A slice of bread, fresh or toasted
How To Make Your Own Butter: Pour cream

Step 1: Pour cream

Pour the cream into the glass jar.

How To Make Your Own Butter: Add marble

Step 2: Add marble

Add the marble and close the jar tightly.

How To Make Your Own Butter: Shake

Step 3: Shake

Shake. And shake. And shake some more. Now… continue shaking.

How To Make Your Own Butter: Keep shaking

Step 4: Keep shaking

After several minutes, the cream will start giving off its liquid and getting chunky; this indicates the butter is starting to form. Keep shaking!

How To Make Your Own Butter: Pour into strainer

Step 5: Pour into strainer

When you can see lumps of butter in a milky liquid, pour the contents of the jar into a strainer set over a bowl.

The liquid that drains through is actual buttermilk. Use it for pancakes or ranch dressing.

How To Make Your Own Butter: Extract liquid

Step 6: Extract liquid

With clean hands or a spoon, press on the butter in the strainer, extracting whatever liquid remains. Let it drain.

If you prefer salted butter, add a teaspoon of salt and blend it in.

How To Make Your Own Butter: Chill butter

Step 7: Chill butter

Remove the butter from the strainer. Roll it into a log and wrap it with parchment paper or press it into a pottery bowl, and chill it in the refrigerator.

How To Make Your Own Butter: Spread butter

Step 8: Spread butter

For an immediate treat, immediately spread the fresh butter on the most delicious bread you can find. Your hard work paid off!

You’d need 21 pounds of fresh cow’s milk to make just one pound of butter.
