You Will Need

• Adobe PhotoShop CS3 for Mac OS X or Windows

• 

  Step 1.

  Use multiple layers

  Create or duplicate a layer.

• 

  Step 2.

  Modify image layer

  Alter the duplicated layer in some noticeable way, if desired.

• 

  Step 3.

  Add layer mask

  Click Add Layer Mask in the Layers palette.

• 

  Step 4.

  Paint layer mask

  Use paint tools to create a transparency map for this layer.

• Make sure your mask is still selected or you’ll paint into the image instead!

• Black = Transparent

• White = Opaque

• 

  Step 5.

  Edit the layer mask as needed

  Keep painting into the layer mask as much as you want until you’re happy with the transparency in the attached layer.

• Take advantage of blend modes!
