Learn how to throw knives, and you’ll be the life of the party—and a candidate for the circus.
Knives are dangerous, especially when thrown. Throw them at your own risk, and never throw them at others.
Get some throwing knives. There are many websites that cater to knife-throwing enthusiasts and that can recommend what kind of knives a beginner should buy.
Find a place to throw the knives, ideally one that is far away from absolutely anything that you could accidentally cut or kill with an errant toss.
Get a target in which knives will stick, like the side of a wooden shed or an old, propped-up wooden door.
Hold the knife in your dominant hand. This is your throwing hand. Grip the handle as you would a hammer, but rest your thumb along the edge.
Get in a proper knife-throwing stance, with your dominant foot back, your weight on your back foot, and your knees bent.
Bring the arm holding the knife back and up. Your elbow should be level with your shoulder.
Throw the knife by swinging your hand and arm toward the target and extending your reach as you throw forward. Keep the knife pointed toward where you want it to go as you let it fly.
Keep practicing until you become adept at hitting your target.
For best results, keep your blades sharp.
Rest your arm between throwing sessions. Just like tennis players and baseball pitchers, knife throwers are at risk for arm injuries if they overdo it.
Terry O’Quinn, who plays the character John Locke on Lost, is proficient in knife throwing.

There a a few steps that are left out of this video. First there are many ways to hold a throwing knife, I have never thrown one in the described manner. Also left out is the distance vs rotation. if you are holding the knife by the handle you are looking for a full rotation of the knife 360* if you are holding it by the blade you are going to want a 180* rotation. Now when throwing the knives you do NOT want to flick your wrist you want the knife to just slide out of your hand, you need to just let go, NO flick. To find your proper distance you need to watch how the knife hits the target if the knife hits the target point up you need to move back, point down you move closer. Now of course you could stay in the same spot and try to change the speed of your throw to make the point stick, but moving back and forth it easier for the beginner. Last the blades do NOT have to be sharp just the point cuz that's all you want to stick, if you look at professional throwing knifes you will see they have no sharpened blade just a point. I give this video two thumbs down

How do you figure the distance vs the rotation of the knife so that the knife ends up with the blade in the object?

I was surprised to see how your are supposed to hold the throwing knife. When I was a kid, we used to hold the tip of the blade and throw the knife.
I will have to try the proscribed way.
