Drinking red wine may be good for your heart, but spilling it down your shirt is bad for the ego. Redeem yourself by eradicating the stain.
Take off the article of clothing.
Blot the stain immediately—don’t rub—with a clean white cloth on both sides of the fabric.
If you must continue wearing the garment before you can launder it, stretch the fabric over a sink or basin and carefully pour white wine, which will help displace the red color, over the stain.
If you don’t have white wine, and if the fabric can withstand it, stretch and secure the fabric over a sink or basin and pour boiling water from a foot or two above the stain.
Wet a clean cloth and blot the stained area from both sides of the fabric.
Blot the area dry with a cloth from both sides of the fabric.
If the fabric can normally be dried without shrinking, blow a hairdryer on the wet area to speed the drying process.
If you’re able to change clothes immediately, skip the white wine and, after blotting the stain, soak the entire article in a sink or basin of cool water for up to 30 minutes.
Treat the stain with stain remover, according to the product directions.
Wash the item as you usually would.
Before drying the item, check the stain—if it hasn’t been removed completely, treat the stain and wash the item again before drying.
For stubborn stains, pour a mixture of one part dishwashing liquid and two parts hydrogen peroxide on the stain, but first dab a little on an inconspicuous spot to make sure it won’t cause discoloration.
When the stain is completely removed, dry the article as you normally would. Cheers!
