How To Make an Indoor Rainbow

When light shines through water—like a raindrop—it bends and breaks up into different colors to make a rainbow. Here’s how to make your own rainbow indoors—no April showers required.

You Will Need

  • A room with light-colored walls
  • A table
  • A round glass jar or a large drinking glass filled with water
  • A mirror small enough to fit inside the jar or glass
  • A flashlight

Step 1: Place mirror

Place the mirror inside the jar or glass so that it’s tilted slightly upward.

Step 2: Put glass on table

Put the jar or glass on a table.

Step 3: Turn off lights

Turn out the lights and close the curtains or shades.

Step 4: Shine flashlight

Turn on the flashlight and shine it on the mirror. A rainbow will appear on the wall—although we can’t promise a pot of gold, too.

If the rainbow doesn’t show up right away, change the angle of light from the flashlight or the angle of the mirror.

The colors of the rainbow—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet—always appear in this exact order.

kso, what is the rainbow supposed to look like exactly? Like, how big should it be? And what shape? Im thinking about doing this for my science project for school and when I tried it there was only a slight outline of color. Please let me know. Thankyou:)
