Show your four-legged friend you care by cooking up some homemade treats.
You will need
- 4 bacon slices
- 2 lb. whole wheat flour
- 1/2 c. cold water
- 1 egg
- 1/2 c. milk
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/4 c. bacon fat
- A frying pan
- Paper towels
- A rolling pin
- A cookie sheet
- Cooking spray
Step 1 Fry the bacon Place the bacon strips side-by-side in the frying pan and fry on medium heat until crispy. Drain on two paper towels on top of a plate, and reserve the fat.
While frying the bacon, preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
Step 2 Mix the flour Pour 3 cups of wheat flour into a bowl, add the water, and stir with a spoon. Add the egg, milk, and garlic powder, mixing thoroughly until the batter is thick and sticky.
Step 3 Add bacon and bacon fat Crumble the bacon strips into small pieces and add them plus 1/4 cup of reserved bacon fat to the mixture. Stir well.
Step 4 Roll the dough Spread a handful of whole wheat flour on the kitchen table or counter. Roll the dough flat until it’s ½-inch thick.
Step 5 Cut up the dough Grease the cookie sheet with the cooking spray. Slice the dough into small, “begging sized” strips and place them on the cookie sheet.
Step 6 Bake and cool Bake in the oven for approximately 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool and use as a training treat or a reward for being a good dog.
