  • 2 qt. pineapple juice

  • A food-coloring set
  • Heavy-duty gloves
  • 3 to 5 lb. dry ice

Dry ice can burn bare skin. Always handle dry ice with heavy-duty gloves.

How To Make Pensieve Punch: Collect photos

Step 1: Collect photos

Collect photos from the party attendees ahead of time. They’ll serve as the “memories” for the pensieve.

Warn people that their pictures may get wet, so they shouldn’t contribute any family heirlooms.

How To Make Pensieve Punch: Decorate the big bowl

Step 2: Decorate the big bowl

Using the nontoxic craft paint, decorate the outside of the larger bowl with magical symbols and wizardly words.

How To Make Pensieve Punch: Tape photos to the small bowl

Step 3: Tape photos to the small bowl

Tape the photos to the outside of the clear punch bowl, facing in.

To protect the photos, cover them in plastic wrap or put them in plastic baggies before taping them to the bowl.

How To Make Pensieve Punch: Mix the punch

Step 4: Mix the punch

Mix the punch ingredients, except for the sherbet, together in the small bowl. Add several drops of various food colorings to give the concoction a murky color.

How To Make Pensieve Punch: Prepare the dry ice

Step 5: Prepare the dry ice

Wearing heavy-duty gloves, place the dry ice on a cutting board and chip half of it into manageable pieces with an ice pick or hammer. Put the pieces in the larger bowl.

How To Make Pensieve Punch: Set the punch bowl in dry ice

Step 6: Set the punch bowl in dry ice

Set the punch bowl inside the larger one and pour warm water in the space between the bowls, creating an eerie vapor.

Add additional dry ice and warm water as needed.

How To Make Pensieve Punch: Add the sherbet

Step 7: Add the sherbet

Scoop sherbet in to your spooky punch to give it a sugary kick. And enjoy!

Did you know? “Pensieve” comes from “pensive,” meaning “deep in thought,” and “sieve,” which is a device for sorting a mixture.
