Step 1: Attend orientation

Attend orientation—even if every member of your family has attended the school and you know your way around campus blindfolded. This is where you’ll meet other newbies looking for friends, too.

Step 2: Attend parties

Attend sorority and fraternity parties during rush week, even if you have no intention of joining up. It’s a good way to meet people.

No matter how homesick you are, don’t go home for the first few weekends or you’ll miss a critical bonding period.

Step 3: Keep dorm room door open

Keep your dorm room door open when you’re just hanging out. It’s an easy way to show that visitors are welcome.

Step 4: Get involved

Get involved in an activity you love or a cause you embrace. After all, a shared interest is what attracts us to our friends.

Step 5: Attend sporting events

Attend your school’s sporting events. According to a 2004 survey, 95 percent of college students agree that these gatherings are a good place to bond with friends.

Step 6: Relax

Relax! Everyone feels a little lost when they first arrive at college.

Most people establish their lifelong friends between ages 15 and 25.
