How To Clean a Curling Iron

It’s inevitable – the sticky, messy buildup accumulating on your curling iron. Use any of these methods to de-gunk and get on with the business of beautifying.

You Will Need

  • Rags
  • Lemon juice
  • Baking soda
  • Nail polish remover
  • Steel wool
  • Rubbing Alcohol
How To Clean a Curling Iron: Unplug and cool

Step 1: Unplug and cool

Unplug and completely cool your iron.

How To Clean a Curling Iron: Use lemon juice

Step 2: Use lemon juice

Soak an old rag in lemon juice and wrap it around the barrel of the iron. Let it soak for 15 minutes and wash clean.

How To Clean a Curling Iron: Apply baking soda

Step 3: Apply baking soda

Mix three parts baking soda with one part water to create a paste, and rub it gently into the cold barrel with a rag. Use a damp rag to wash the paste off.

How To Clean a Curling Iron: Use nail polish remover

Step 4: Use nail polish remover

Wipe with nail polish remover as an alternative to baking soda. The acetone will remove residue in about 10 minutes.

Don’t leave on longer than 20 minutes or it could damage your iron.

How To Clean a Curling Iron: Scrub with steel wool

Step 5: Scrub with steel wool

If your iron is not coated with Teflon, scrub with a steel wool pad.

How To Clean a Curling Iron: Prevent build-up

Step 6: Prevent build-up

Prevent hairspray and gel from building up on your curling iron by wiping it with rubbing alcohol after each use.

Hot Tools, an appliance manufacturer has an iron cleaner in a bottle that does not require all of those steps in the video. and Steel wool is never a good idea to use on any appliance... it will cause snags and scratches. It is best to use a teflon scrubbie pad if you have let it get to baked on...
