Planning a trip to a museum can be an art in itself. Here’s how to do it right.
Take a survey of the museums in your area. Some will house modern art, others historical art; some will show solely paintings or portraits, while others might be dedicated to a single artist.
Check out local city magazines, like Time Out or ones like New York Magazine in NYC
Poll the party you’ll be going with to see which museums they want to visit. Pick a place with something for everyone.
Go online to find out what times the museum will be open, what the price of admission is, and whether and when any special exhibits will be available.
If you can, purchase your tickets online ahead of time, which will save you time—and maybe money—once you arrive.
If you have children, check to see if the museum has any special areas for kids.
If you’re interested in a guided tour—which can be very informative—check the schedule and costs. If you’re in a foreign country, check the available languages.
Some museums stay open late one evening and/or charge no admission one day a week—do your research if your time and money are tight.
If the museum website provides online maps, take a look at them to plan your excursion. It’ll help you get to the exhibits you want to see.
Check for how you’re going to get there—by car, train, bus, or rickshaw. Be sure to have enough cash to pay for your transportation.
Set aside clothing that’s both comfortable and appropriate for a museum. Ideally, nice but not restrictive. Remember that you’ll be on your feet.
If you have children, just before you go make sure they’re fed, have gone to the restroom, and that they have enough energy for the excursion.
Now get to the museum and enjoy the art!
Some museums—like the American Museum of Natural History in New York—now offer sleepovers.

Museums can be really expensive. Some of my favorite museums in New York City are actually free enter. Both the Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art only have suggested admission. You can pay as little as a penny to enter. It's up to you! I love to check out the roof top bar at the MET in the summer time. It's the best!
