When writing a letter to a friend or a friendly acquaintance it’s important to use the right style and tone to give the letter a feeling of casual but sincere friendliness.
Fold your letter, place it in an envelope, then lick and seal the envelope.
Make sure the envelope is sealed. If you’re not sure, seal it with a short strip of clear tape.
Write the name of the letter’s recipient on the front of the envelope at the center.
Print the street address, including apartment or suite number if appropriate, on the next line below the name.
Write the city, state and ZIP code on the next line. Use the two-letter state code if you know it.
Print your own name and address in the upper left corner of the envelope.
Affix one 34-cent stamp in the upper right corner for a regular-sized letter
If your envelope weighs more than 1 oz., is being mailed outside the United States, or if it’s larger, additional postage will be required. You can find the correct rate at the post office to determine the correct postage if you’re not sure
Place the envelope in your mailbox.
If there is one, raise the red flag on the mailbox to indicate that you have outgoing mail.
Place the letter in a large blue mailbox with an earlier pickup time if you want the letter to be on its way sooner.
More than 100,000,000,000 pieces of junk mail are delivered each year—that’s more than 800 pieces per household.

Not totally relevant, but I have recently used http://SnailMailr.com - that allows you to send a letter online... Basically you write your letter online at that website and then they print and mail it for you. It costs $1 (vs. $0.42) but it does save you some time.
