Step 1: Learn about weddings
Build wedding expertise. Do research on the internet, read bridal magazines, and ask friends and family members about their experiences. Attend bridal expos in your area and speak to booth operators.
Certification programs for wedding planners cover valuable skills and techniques, but a certificate is not a requirement.
Step 2: Practice organization
Get organized. Use a planner and address book or other devices to keep track of phone numbers and appointments.
Step 3: Get an internship or related job
Secure an internship with a wedding planner or get a job that provides related experience, such as a party planner or department store bridal consultant.
Step 4: Build your portfolio
Offer to plan weddings for friends and family members for free or for reduced rates. Use photos of these events to build your portfolio.
Use staged photos of table settings or decor you’ve created if you don’t have enough wedding photos for your portfolio.
Step 5: Network with vendors
Get to know local vendors who supply rental equipment, flowers, cakes, music, and catering services. You’ll ensure smooth transactions later, and they may refer clients to you.
Step 6: Advertise to build clients
Leave brochures and business cards at dress and jewelry stores. Local magazine and newspaper ads and radio spots will also get your name out there. Set up a website for your business. Remember, word of mouth is often the best form of advertising.
