Become a better fisherman with the fishing tips in these how to fish videos from Howcast.

You Will Need

  • A body of water
  • A bobber
  • A sinker
  • A fishing rod

Steps

  1. Step 1

    Attach the bobber and sinker

Attach the bobber to the line six to eight inches from the tip of the rod and attach the sinker to the end of the line.

  2. Step 2

    Grip the rod

Grip the rod like you’re giving it a firm handshake.

  3. Step 3

    Press the release button

Press and hold the release button with your thumb.

  4. Step 4

    Turn your body and point

Turn your body a quarter turn, putting your weight on your right foot if you are right handed, and point the rod tip toward a target at about eye level.

  5. Step 5

    Check for room to cast

Look around to be sure nothing is in the way.

  6. Step 6

    Raise rod upright

Bend your arm at the elbow, bringing your hand gripping the rod to eye level.

  7. Overhand casting is used in a clear area, or when fishing near the ocean. Cast sidearm in tight spaces.

  8. Step 7

    Cast the line

Bring the rod forward with your wrist but not your elbow. The bobber and sinker will fly out to the water with the force of your motion.

  9. Practice in your yard by using a small object, weighted but without edges or points, attached to a line.

  10. Step 8

    Reel it in

Create line tension by running the line through your forefinger and thumb as you reel it back up. You will hear the click of the pick-up pin, which prevents excess line from escaping while you are fishing.

  11. Did you know? About one-third of the world's fish harvest is used to feed pets and livestock.
