One of the most dangerous driving hazards, especially in rural areas during winter months, is deer collisions. Find out how to avoid this dangerous situation.
You Will Need
- A cell phone
- A flashlight
- Road flares
Deer collisions can occur any time of day and in suburban and urban areas as well.
Step 1: Heed deer crossing signs
Heed deer crossing signs. Be cautious during dawn and dusk hours. Deer usually rest in the daytime and feed at night.
Deer are more active in October, November, and December, which are their breeding months.
Step 2: Honk horn
Slow down and honk your horn if you see a deer standing near the road. The sound of the horn may scare them away.
Step 3: Do not swerve
Do not swerve out of your lane to avoid hitting deer. Swerving can cause you to lose control of your car and hit an oncoming vehicle or a tree. Slow down to avoid losing control.
Step 4: Brake at last moment
Brake at the last moment if a collision is inevitable. Take your foot off the brake pedal before impact. The car’s front end will rise and send the deer’s carcass under your car, preventing it from hitting your windshield.
