How To Test a Microwave For Leaks

Microwave radiation leakage is rare but does happen. Here’s how to test your appliance.

You Will Need

  • A microwave oven
  • A cell phone
  • Another phone

Step 1: Visually inspect microwave

Visually inspect your microwave for possible signs of leakage, such as dust in the door seals.

Step 2: Do the cell phone test

Unplug your microwave, put your cell phone inside, close the door, and call it from another phone. If it rings, you have a leak.

Step 3: Take microwave to repair professional

Take your microwave to a repair professional. Repair services have the proper tools to gauge leak hazards.

A repair service must have state-legislated testing equipment, and must notify state agencies of any leaks.

Step 4: Contact state agency

If you don’t take your microwave to a repair shop, contact your state health department or local Food and Drug Administration field office.

Did you know? The Food and Drug Administration has regulated the manufacture of microwave ovens since 1971.

I did this test with my microwave and the phone rang. I did this test on my moms brand new microwave and once again, the phone rang. Well, I've tried the test on friends microwaves....phone rings every time. I'm thinking that this test is not accurate.

I tried the test while I had the microwave connected to the outlet. the phone rang. how ever, once I unplugged it and retested it the cell phone didn't ring. my phone went directly to voice mail as if the phone was turned off.

When I did the test, I unplugged the microwave from the wall outlet, and the phone rang, and if the phone rings, there is leakage in the microwave. I would not get it repaired. It is much cheaper to buy a new microwave and be sure. Do not risk your health. You cannot put a price on your health.

I am beginning to think the test with the cell phone is not accurate. I went out today and brought a brand new microwave and tested it when I got home, and the cell phone rang. I think there really is no accurate way to test for leakage in the microwave.

I do not think the cell phone test is accurate. I brought a brand new microwave, brought it home and did the test, and the cell phone rang.
