You’re blissfully wrinkle-free but your shiny face is plagued with large pores, blackheads, and blemishes. Fix it with these tips.

You Will Need

  • A mild cleanser
  • Astringent
  • Oil-free moisturizer with SPF
  • A salicylic acid product
  • A clay mask
  • A low-fat diet
  • A multivitamin
  • Cleansing cloth (optional)
  • Sunscreen gel (optional)
How To Care For Oily Facial Skin: Wash with mild cleanser

Step 1: Wash with mild cleanser

Wash your face twice daily with a mild cleanser free of oil or waxes that aggravate oily skin. Rinse with warm water. Use a cleanser or toner with hydroxy acid regularly to remove dead skin cells that build up on greasy complexions.

Use a cleansing cloth for oily skin – they contain mild cleansers and provide gentle exfoliation.

How To Care For Oily Facial Skin: Apply astringent daily

Step 2: Apply astringent daily

Apply a non-alcohol-based astringent such as witch hazel to absorb extra oil. Witch hazel is natural and helps prevent acne.

Alcohol-based products strip too much oil from the face, which compensates by producing even more oil.

How To Care For Oily Facial Skin: Moisturize

Step 3: Moisturize

Moisturize with a light, oil-free moisturizer with SPF. Avoid products with cocoa butter and mineral oil. Depending on how oily your skin is, moisturizing may not be not required daily, so use only as needed.

Use a gel-based sunscreen instead of a lotion-based one.

How To Care For Oily Facial Skin: Treat breakouts

Step 4: Treat breakouts

Treat breakouts with a product containing salicylic acid, such as lotion, cleanser, toner, or medicated pads.

How To Care For Oily Facial Skin: Use a clay mask

Step 5: Use a clay mask

Use a clay mask two to three times weekly to get rid of excess oil. Choose a darker brown clay mask, which absorbs more oil. Apply the mask and leave on for 15 minutes, and then rinse with warm water.

How To Care For Oily Facial Skin: Eat right

Step 6: Eat right

Eat a low-fat diet high in fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates. Avoid animal and dairy fat, caffeine, sugar, and refined starches. Drink six to eight glasses of water daily and take a multivitamin.

Oily skin is an inherited trait, but before you blame your parents, know that hormones can also play a role.
