Ok, clearly theres a couple problems I see with this video. First, before you change a flat on the REAR of a vehicle (as it seems that location is popular in all these ";how to's";), check to make sure you don't have a ";limitted slip differential"; rear end (your manual should tell you). Driving with two different or unmatched tires on the rear of the vehicle can cause damage to your differential assembly and can run hundreds to thousands of dollars to replace depending on the vehicle - especially on typical sport cars). I'm a little surprised the mechanic didn't point that out - but then again he could be hoping to get your business again VERY soon so he can soak you for a new rear end. Second problem I see is that when you get a flat, you shouldn't need to buy a BRAND NEW tire to replace it. If you look at 4:03 you can see that he's balancing a new tire (the sticker is still on it). I don't know of any places that would give you a new tire rather than fix the puncture in the old tire, even if the damage is near the outside of the treads or down to the wear bars - you'll still end up getting charged for a new tire - actually you'll need 2 as you always buy new tires in pairs so for that vehicle in the video, I'd guess that flat cost her a bit over $120 if not more. Tire stores or even the local mechanic down the street should always let you know if you need new replacement parts and should provide you with a written estimate before just doing the repair without your permission.
