Chances are you’ve heard the “Om” mantra in a movie or during a yoga class. Also called the pranava mantra, meaning source of all mantras, it is said both on its own and with other Hindu mantras to facilitate meditation.

You Will Need

  • Time to meditate
  • A calm and quiet environment
  • Mental and verbal awareness of Om
  • A mat

Step 1: Set aside a time

Set aside a time when you can meditate in a calm and quiet environment.

Step 2: Sit with legs crossed

If you have one, place a mat on the ground and sit upright with your legs crossed and your hands in your lap. If you like, you can hold your thumbs and forefingers together. This posture prepares you for meditation by making a circle of energy from the base of the spine to the top of the head.

Step 3: Close your eyes

Close your eyes.

Step 4: Breathe naturally

Breathe naturally, preferably through the nose.

You may want to follow certain breathing practices, such as alternating nostrils (by closing them off with your fingers), in order to help free your mind from outside thoughts and focus on the meditation.

Step 5: Intone Om mentally and verbally

Intone Om mentally and verbally.

Make sure to voice the “O” sound as a long O, such as in the American pronunciation of the word home. Spend the same amount on both the “O” and “M”: Ooooommmmm.

Step 6: Repeat as desired

Repeat as desired and/or begin another mantra.

Om symbolizes Brahman, who is the impersonal Absolute of Hinduism—since one can’t fully comprehend this Unknowable, the symbol of Om is required.
