Learn how to help your children overcome separation anxiety with these tips.

You Will Need

  • An apprehensive child
  • A photo or other comfort item
  • Confidence

Step 1: Discuss activities

Discuss with your child their upcoming activities while you will be away, and mention what you will do together when you return.

Step 2: Say goodbye and leave

Say goodbye with a kiss and a hug and leave. Do not prolong the leaving process.

Step 3: Display a positive attitude

Display a positive attitude toward your child to show that you are confident with your decision to leave them.

Do not be apprehensive; your child will pick up on your uneasiness.

Step 4: Bring a comfort item

Pick out a small photo or comfort item with your child at home. Put it in your child’s pocket for comfort during periods of uneasiness during the day.

Step 5: Review their day

Ask your child what they did while you were gone. Discuss the fun activities and remember to talk about them the next time you leave.

Step 6: Interact with other children

Schedule play dates with a friend who will be with your child when you are gone. Seeing a familiar face will make your child feel more comfortable.

Step 7: Respect you child

Never criticize your child’s feelings. Let them know it is okay for them to have these feelings and explain that you want to help them overcome their fears.

Four out of 5 children receive childcare before kindergarten.
