How To Survive Gym Class

If your day revolves around dreading the potential humiliation of dodgeball and rope climbing, here are a few tips to help you get overcome it.

You Will Need

  • Friends
  • Sports knowledge
  • Deodorant
  • Clean gym clothes
  • Acting skills
  • Athletic skill (optional)

Step 1: Stick with friends

Keep any trusted companions – or even anyone you kinda sorta know from class – close by. If you surround yourself with familiar faces, you’ll start to relax and maybe even have a smidgen of fun.

Step 2: Know your positions

Stay under the radar by playing the P.E. positions that get the least amount of action. In softball try right field, and in basketball stand out by the three-point line and immediately pass the ball if it ever touches your hands.

Step 3: Be supportive

Always be supportive and encouraging of the other kids in your class. Most of them are in the same boat and if you cheer them on you’re likely to get encouragement in return.

Step 4: Talk with your teacher

If there’s something specifically bothering you, try talking to your gym teacher one-on-one. Maybe you’re tired of being paired up with that super-competitive kid, or simply feel there’s too much being asked of you. Whatever it is, let them know.

Step 5: Keep clean

Always clean yourself up afterward, use plenty of deodorant, and wear clean gym clothes every day. You may not be the most athletic kid in P.E., but at least you won’t be the smelliest.

If being seen naked in front of classmates is too much to handle, change in a bathroom stall or wrap a towel around your waist or chest and put on your skivvies underneath it.

Step 6: Fake an injury

If you’re having one of those days where you just can’t face a one-mile run or getting pelted by a dodgeball, there is a last resort – fake an injury. You can only do this about once a semester, so consider carefully before using this free pass. You’ll be on the sidelines in no time, while your classmates are getting red-faced and sweaty.

In 1866 California became the first state to pass a law requiring physical education in schools.
