How To Hide Speakers With Old Books: Gather books

Step 1: Gather books

Gather three or more books that, side by side, will be wide enough to contain your speaker.

If you do not have any books you want to sacrifice, shop at a garage or used book sale.

How To Hide Speakers With Old Books: Trace speaker on book

Step 2: Trace speaker on book

Place the speaker on the front cover of the center book, and trace a rectangle that is slightly larger than the speaker around it. Drill a pilot hole all the way through the center book, and cut the outline all the way through the book with the jigsaw.

How To Hide Speakers With Old Books: Cut end books

Step 3: Cut end books

Trace the same-size rectangle on the back cover of the first book and the front cover of the third book. Cut out the shape on the pages and the inside covers, but do not cut the front cover of the first book or the back cover of the third book.

Make sure you cut a cavity large enough for the speaker to have a little extra room.

How To Hide Speakers With Old Books: Remove paper near spine

Step 4: Remove paper near spine

Remove the paper near the spine of the books with the jigsaw. This will improve sound quality because the speaker will face the inside spine.

How To Hide Speakers With Old Books: Poke holes

Step 5: Poke holes

Poke several small holes with the awl in the spines of all three books.

How To Hide Speakers With Old Books: Secure speaker

Step 6: Secure speaker

Glue the edges and back of the speaker to the pages on the inside of the center book. Be generous with the glue to keep the speaker snug in the rectangle shaped pages.

How To Hide Speakers With Old Books: Cut out paper for wires

Step 7: Cut out paper for wires

Cut an area through the pages for the wires to go through, apply glue to both ends of outside of the center book, align the two end books and secure the three books together.

How To Hide Speakers With Old Books: Cut hole

Step 8: Cut hole

Cut a hole slightly larger than a quarter in the back cover of the center book, opposite the spine, to allow air to flow. Then brush glue along the pages to keep them from vibrating when sound comes through the speaker.

How To Hide Speakers With Old Books: Find spot

Step 9: Find spot

Mount the books and enjoy listening to your favorite artists.

More than two billion books are published in the United States every year.

Kids usually get tired of books and they end scattered all over the room or ending up in the storage area and sometimes up in the attic. I would say that this idea will be great to encourage our son or daughter to do active recycling and at the same time money is saved.
