Save the empty cans from your favorite beer and use them to make a custom hat.
Cut around the labels of the cans, cutting two 3½- inch wide by 4-inch long panels from each can.
Punch 34 holes around the perimeter of each panel. Space the holes evenly, a ¼ inch from the edge.
Do two single crochet stitches in each hole, and four single crochet stitches in the corner holes of one of the panels. Slip stitch and break the yarn, and repeat for the remaining panels.
Sew the panels to each other using the yarn needle. Sew along the long sides, joining two panels at a time.
Do a single-crochet stitch in each stitch in the top holes, and two single crochets between the labels. Slip stitch and break the yarn.
Alternate colors of yarn to create interesting patterns for the hat.
Chain two in the second row. Do a double crochet stitch in each stitch, skipping one single stitch between each label, and then slip stitch and break the yarn.
Chain two in the third row. Do a double-crochet stitch in the first two stitches, skip the third, double crochet the fourth, and skip the fifth. Slip stitch and break the yarn and repeat for the next four rows.
Crochet another label into the top of the hat.
Do a single-crochet stitch for each stitch on the bottom of the panels, working in two single-crochet stitches between each label. Slip stitch and break the yarn.
Chain two in the second row. Do a double-crochet stitch in the first four stitches; then work two double-crochet stitches in the fifth. Slip stitch and break the yarn.
Chain two in the third row. Do a double-crochet stitch for eight stitches, and two double crochet stitches in the ninth. Slip stitch and break the yarn.
Do a double-crochet stitch for 16 stitches, and do two double-crochet stitches on the next. Slip stitch and break yarn. Finish the brim by working a single-crochet stitch in each stitch.
Did you know? Breweries developed cone-top beer cans in the 1930s, allowing them to use their existing bottling equipment to fill and cap cans.
