Follow these tips to save hundreds, or even thousands, on a remodeling job.

You Will Need

  • Safety glasses and gloves
  • A measuring tape
  • Crown molding
  • Paint or stain
  • A paint brush
  • A miter saw
  • A stud finder
  • A pencil
  • A hammer
  • Finishing nails
  • A countersink
  • Wood putty
  • Fine sandpaper
  • Scrap wood (optional)
  • An electric drill with drill bit (optional)

Always wear safety glasses and gloves when working with wood.

Step 1: Measure the walls

Measure the walls to determine the length of molding you need.

Step 2: Paint or stain the molding

Paint or stain the molding and let it dry.

Step 3: Cut the molding

Cut the molding to the desired angles and lengths with a miter saw.

Practice cutting different angles with scrap pieces of wood. This will improve your accuracy and increase your skill level.

Step 4: Locate wall studs

Locate wall studs using the stud finder. Studs are typically 12 to 14 inches apart. Mark the studs’ locations with a pencil.

Step 5: Drill nail holes into molding

Hold the molding up to the wall, and measure out where it will hit the studs. Mark those areas on the molding with a pencil. Then, pre-drill nail holes at the markings, which will prevent the molding from splitting when you attach it to the studs in the wall.

Step 6: Fasten the molding

Fasten the molding to the studs with finishing nails, countersinking each nail.

Step 7: Finish the look

Fill the nail holes and gaps in the joints with wood putty. Smooth these areas with fine sandpaper and finish to match the rest of the molding.
