THANK YOU TODD for sharing your story! Please continue! I also have cardiac arrhythmias and during this past year specific problems with supraventricular tachycardia. I've been on beta blockers for years to control the irregular beats/rhythms I've had but the SVT is new to me. The first time it happened, my heart rate flipped from normal to the 170's and then went into the 190's. This was sustained for about an hour when I was then cardioverted with Adenosine in the back of an ambulance. It is NOT a fun thing to have your heart stopped and restarted when you're wide awake! I also experienced the tightness around my chest. I described it as though someone had grabbed hold of my bra and pulled it around me as tight as it would stretch. The adenosine cardioversion was successful and I went back to a rate in the 90's. At that time, my cardiologist increased my beta blocker dosage (Toprol XL) to 100mg. every 12 hours. This occurred Feb. '08 and tonight I had another episode lasting about 4 minutes. I was told to try the "gag reflex" which did not work for me at all but the Val Salva maneuver (bearing down STRONGLY) worked on the 3rd try...unless it was a coincidence, who knows?! I'll be seeing the dr. again Monday and I may be headed down the same road of ablation or pacemaker. Medication seems to have failed at this point. Keep us posted...if anyone would like to chat more about this problem, I'm willing to share and listen. Email me at ayla1958@wildblue.net God bless and keep you!
