Think you have what it takes to be the next big thing in professional car racing? Here’s how to get started.
Begin with go-kart racing; that’s how many IndyCar series drivers get their start. Buy a kart and find a kart club to join through the World Karting Association.
Be assertive, persistent, and competitive, on and off the track. A study of champion car racers showed that those were the personality traits that separated the winners from the losers.
When you can’t be on the track, sharpen your skills on motor-sport video games.
Get fit. Like any other sport, car racing requires participants to be in peak physical condition. Most professional car racers work out about two hours a day.
Consider taking a training course at a driving school.
Volunteer at a race track or for a race team. Connections are important.
If you’re a member of a minority group, check out the NASCAR program Drive for Diversity, which is dedicated to helping minorities break into the sport.
Find a sponsor. Car racing is an expensive hobby, and turning it into a career takes either personal wealth or a sponsor with deep pockets.
Gain on-track experience by joining a school race series and/or attending driving days sponsored by car clubs.
Compete as often as you can. If you begin to win races, teams, sponsors, and success will follow.
Forty percent of NASCAR’s fan base is female.

Good post, especially the part about Go-Kart racing. That's how Jeff Gordon (4-time NASCAR champion) got started. Oh, and it also helps to have a ton of talent too.
