You don’t need to leave your four-legged friend behind when you take a road trip if you follow these tips for safety.
Avoid leaving your dog alone in a parked vehicle. Temperatures can rise quickly inside a car, leading to heat stress or suffocation.
Restrain your dog in the car and keep them safe with a crate, a safety harness, or a barrier.
Use a crate for the most secure method of travel. Secure the crate so it doesn’t move around while you’re driving.
Take short trips to get your dog used to being in the car and used to the restraint.
Avoid feeding your dog for three or four hours before a car ride and consult your veterinarian if your dog gets carsick.
Get your dog a secure collar with your cell phone number on it, in case you get separated while traveling.
Stop often so your dog can relieve themselves and have some water. Use the clean-up bags.
Don’t let your dog ride with their head out the window or in the back of a truck. Injuries can occur from flying debris or sudden starts and stops.
Give your dog water and lots of love when you get to your final destination. Enjoy your trip, knowing that your furry friend will be with you all the way.
Since 1990, the Labrador Retriever has been the most popular purebred dog in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club’s registration statistics.
