Distinguish yourself as a class act by remembering what your mother taught you.
Mind your manners. Say please and thank you everywhere, in every situation. Seek to make every social experience a positive one.
Be well groomed and polished as a matter of respect for yourself and for those you encounter.
Go out of your way to help others — hold doors, offer directions, share your time, money, and advice without expecting anyone to reciprocate.
Remember — what you learned in kindergarten about sharing and mutual respect will go a long way.
Make tasteful observations and jokes. Avoid jokes told at the expense of other people.
Listen well, making eye contact. Wait to speak and steer clear of arguments.
Admit mistakes and accept criticism graciously. People appreciate being around someone who is self-aware and personally responsible.
Don’t shame, embarrass, or taunt others. Never stare at someone.
In 1717, Stede Bonnet, a retired British army major with a large sugar plantation in Barbados, abandoned his wife, children, land and fortune; bought a ship; and embarked on a career as a pirate, earning him the nickname, “The Gentleman Pirate.”
