You Will Need

  • A graphite pencil
  • Paper
  • An erase

Steps

  1. Step 1

    Create framework

Draw an ellipse the size you’ve determined for your finished flame drawing.

  2. Step 2

    Add primary flame

Draw a tear-shape from the top of the ellipse to the base, centering it within the shape.

  3. Step 3

    Add flame spikes

Create three or more flame spikes toward the top of the tear shape, making sure the center spike is tallest.

  4. Flames are a dynamic force. Try to capture the feel of action by elongating the spikes.

  5. Step 4

    Add flame layers

Duplicate the spikes just inside the original spike lines to add inner flames. Repeat the step to create three flame layers.

  6. Stand-alone sparks coming off flame tips create a flicker effect.

  7. Step 5

    Erase guidelines and add shading

Erase your guidelines and shade the flames near the bottom. Now, use your imagination to create some super hot images and designs.

  8. Did you know? President John F. Kennedy's grave at Arlington National Cemetery is marked by an eternal flame.
