Prom is an important day in a teen’s life, and it can come with a lot of peer pressure.

You Will Need

  • Research
  • Self-control
  • Self awareness
  • Confidence
  • Expense plan
  • Friends
  • "Bailout plan"
  • Designated driver (optional)

Step 1: Research

Research the facts and effects alcohol and drugs can have on your body.

Alcohol and drugs impair your judgment, which can put you in danger.

Step 2: Stay in control

Stay in control and be aware of your surroundings. Alcohol and drugs often factor into teens losing their virginity. Ask yourself if what’s going on around you is wrong, illegal, or if it endangers you and your friends.

Step 3: Examine your motives

Think about why you want to do something – especially something you know you shouldn’t. If it’s because someone else is doing it, or because someone else wants you to, your best bet is to walk away.

Step 4: Say no

Learn to say no with confidence. Don’t feel pressured into sex, and make sure your date knows that “no means no.”

Step 5: Plan

Plan the cost of all your expenses and don’t feel pressured to pay for everything.

Step 6: Find friends

Find friends that share your goals, values, and beliefs. A good friend will support you in whatever decisions you make.

Make sure there is a designated driver – just in case.

Step 7: Arrange bailout

Before you leave for prom, arrange a bailout plan with your parents if you feel yourself in danger or uncomfortable in a situation.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 31 percent of 12th graders have tried marijuana.
