Being a teetotaler has never been tastier.

You Will Need

  • A funnel
  • A plastic bottle or jug with a top
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon baker's yeast
  • 1 tablespoon root beer extract
  • Water

Steps

  1. Step 1

    Place funnel in bottle

Place the funnel in the top of the bottle.

  2. Make sure the bottle is clean before using.

  3. Step 2

    Pour sugar

Pour the sugar through the funnel into the bottle.

  4. Step 3

    Add yeast

Add the yeast to the sugar and shake the bottle to thoroughly mix the sugar and yeast together.

  5. Step 4

    Add root beer extract

Add one tablespoon of root beer extract to the mixture.

  6. Swirl the bottle to make the sugar and yeast mixture concave, making a little bowl to catch the root beer extract.

  7. Step 5

    Add water

Add cold water through the funnel until the bottle is half way full.

  8. Step 6

    Shake

Swirl the mixture around until the sugar and yeast are dissolved.

  9. Step 7

    Add water

Add more cold water, leaving 1 to 2 inches from the top of the bottle empty. Put the cap on tightly and gently swirl and tip the container until everything's thoroughly mixed.

  10. Step 8

    Let sit

Let the mixture sit at room temperature for 2 to 4 days. When the bottle hardens from the gas build-up inside, it is time to put it in the refrigerator.

  11. Over carbonating the root beer can cause the bottle to explode.

  12. Step 9

    Open and enjoy

Slowly unscrew the cap and enjoy. The root beer will have negligible alcohol content, but not enough to get anyone drunk.

  13. A&W root beer, founded in 1922, bears the initials of Roy Allen, inventor of root beer, and business partner Frank Wright.
