You Will Need

  • A soft-bristled paintbrush
  • 3 soft, lint-free cloths
  • A spray bottle
  • Rubbing alcohol

Steps

  1. Step 1

    Brush dust off the frame

Brush the mirror frame with a soft-bristled paintbrush to remove dust and debris.

  2. Step 2

    Wipe off dust

Wipe the mirror with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove any dust.

  3. If the mirror has black marks or voids, it may need to be re-silvered. However, re-silvering antique mirrors decreases the value.

  4. Step 3

Put rubbing alcohol and water in bottle

Add one part rubbing alcohol and two parts water to a spray bottle.

  5. Step 4

    Spray cloth and wipe mirror

Spray the alcohol and water mixture onto another lint-free cloth and wipe down the mirror.

  6. Avoid getting moisture between the glass and the silvering of the mirror by spraying the cloth until it is damp, not wet.

  7. Step 5

    Dry mirror

Dry the mirror with a dry lint-free cloth. Stand back and look at that handsome face.

  8. In June 2007, the Hall of Mirrors at Chateau de Versailles, built by Louis XIV, was reopened after a $16 million restoration -- the first top-to-bottom restoration of the hall in over 300 years.
