  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1/4 c. water
  • 1/2 lemon
  • Cinnamon
  • Apple corer
  • Medium saucepan
  • Food mill

Steps

  1. Step 1

Core and slice apples into eighths

Core and slice each of the apples into eighths.

  2. Step 2

Cook all ingredients over medium heat

Combine the apples, sugar, water, and the juice from half of a lemon in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the apples are very soft.

  3. Use less water for a thicker, lumpier sauce and more water for a thinner, runnier sauce.

  4. Step 3

Process apples in a food mill

Move the apples to a food mill fitted with a fine-holed disk, and process to remove the seeds and skins.

  5. Use a fork to mash up the apples if you don't have a food mill, but be sure to pick out all of the seeds and bits of skin.

  6. Step 4

Refrigerate in covered container up to 3 days

Transfer the applesauce to a container with a tight-fitting lid, and store it in the refrigerator. Your applesauce will stay fresh for up to 3 days.

  7. Step 5

    Serve with cinnamon

Serve the applesauce alone or with pork chops or another favorite dish. Sprinkle it with a pinch of cinnamon for added flavor.

  8. According to the U.S. Apple Association, 7,500 different apple growers grow almost 100 varieties of apples in 36 states.
