You Will Need
- 1" poplar wood
- Miter saw
- Clamps
- Router
- Wood glue
- Hammer and nails
- Sandpaper
- Paint and paintbrush

Step 1
Cut
Mark the wood and use a miter saw to cut the rectangular perimeter pieces, with both sides 24 inches high and the top and bottom 36 inches long. Cut a 2-inch strip that will serve as the wall mount if you plan to hang it.

Notch top and bottom
Clamp down the top and bottom pieces and make a horizontal notch directly in the center with the router to accommodate the center divider.

Have extra pieces cut in case you make a mistake using the router, which slips easily.

Assemble
Assemble the perimeter of the rack by gluing all the joints together. Then nail them together for added security. Measure and cut a center divider the length of the sides and hammer it into the router groove.

Insert diagonal pieces
Create two X-shaped inserts to support the bottles. Measure the diagonal of the first rectangle and cut two pieces to the same length, one for the top and one for the bottom. Bevel the ends at a 45-degree angle so they fit into the frame. Router a rabbit joint in the center on both sides of the diagonal pieces.

Step 5
Make cross pieces
Cut four shorter crosspieces with one end at a 45-degree angle. Slide the beveled end against the frame and the other end into the slotted rabbit joint in the long crosspiece. Glue it in and nail it down.

Finish
Attach the wall mount with nails along the top edge. Sand and paint your wine rack and hang it from the wall studs or place it on your counter.

Red wine should be served at a temperature of 50 to 65 degrees. White wines should be chilled about an hour and served at 45 to 50 degrees.
