  1. Step 1

    Know that pain may vary

    Know that pain may vary depending on the person’s age, and the position of the appendix.

  2. Pregnant woman and young children may experience pain in different places.

  3. Step 2

    Know that pain will occur near navel

    Know that pain typically starts around your navel and then shifts to your right abdomen.

  4. Step 3

    Know that pain can worsen

    Be aware that pain may get worse if you walk, cough, or move.

  5. Step 4

    Recognize loss of appetite, nausea, swelling, and fever

    Recognize as symptoms a loss of appetite, nausea, swelling of the abdominal area, and a high fever.

  6. Step 5

    Recognize diarrhea, painful urination, and constipation

    Be aware that diarrhea with gas, painful urination, and constipation can occur.

  7. Step 6

    Contact a doctor

    Contact a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms -- you may have appendicitis.

  8. Appendicitis will usually occur when a person is between the ages of 10 and 30.
