Steps

  1. Step 1

    Look for a moving company

    Look for movers well before your move. Concentrate on companies that are accredited members of a moving association or trade body. Ask for recommendations from family, friends, or realtors. Ask the potential movers for referrals.

  2. Plan to have a moving company lined up to help you 1 to 2 months before your moving day.

  3. Step 2

    Ask for a quote

    Call the mover and ask for a quote, but don't accept a quote over the phone. The only meaningful quote comes after an in-house inspection.

  4. Step 3

    Have a checklist ready

    Show the moving company representative everything you want them to move at the time of the inspection. Have a checklist ready detailing all the things you want the mover to do.

  5. Step 4

    Get several quotes

    Get two to three quotes from moving companies, and make sure you understand what the quotes cover. Check the moving company's inventory list for accuracy.

  6. Toss out any low-ball quotes. If one offer is totally out of the range of the others, chances are it is too good to be true.

  7. Step 5

    Check the mover's license

    Check that the mover is licensed. Also consult the Better Business Bureau to see whether there are any unresolved complaints against it.

  8. A 2004 U.S. Department of Transportation and FBI investigation found fraudulent moving companies trying to extort money from customers by holding their goods hostage until the customers paid additional fees.
