With the popularity of the 2009 cash for clunkers program, a lot of used vehicles ended up in junkyards. If you know what you are looking for, you can salvage parts that will help your own car or truck run better from old hunks of junk.
You Will Need
- Junkyard
- Old clothes
- Tools
- Friend
Step 1: Call around
Call many junkyards for part availability and pricing. Many junk yards are willing to negotiate on price.
Make sure the junk yard, automobile recycler, or salvage yard you visit is reputable. Most states require junkyards to be licensed.
Step 2: Wear old clothes
Wear old clothes to the junkyard. You are likely to get dirty!
Step 3: Take along tools
Pack many kinds of tools. You are responsible for removing the part you need from the abandoned vehicle.
Stay clear of biohazard vehicles. They are marked with a biohazard caution sign.
Step 4: Bring help
Bring along a friend to help remove the part, especially if the item that you are after is large or difficult to remove. While you are there, walk around and see what other gems just may be hiding in the discarded junk.
