How to Replace Weather Stripping
Keep the cold out this winter by replacing worn out weather stripping around your windows and doors.

You Will Need
- Soap
- Water
- Tape measure
- Utility knife
- Self-adhesive foam weather stripping
- Door sweep
- Screws
- Screwdriver
Steps

Step 1
Pull off weather stripping
Pull off the existing weather stripping. If correctly installed originally, it should peel off the door or window stop.

Step 2
Clean the door and window
Use soapy water to scrub and clean the stops of your window or door. Let it dry completely.

Measure the sides of the door or window
Carefully measure the top and side stops of your door or the stops of your window.

Measure twice before cutting to make sure your measurement is accurate. Ideally, each stop will be sealed with one solid piece of weather stripping.

Step 4
Cut weatherstripping to size
Use a utility knife to cut the weather stripping to match your measurements.

Remove the back from the weather stripping
Slowly peel the back from one of the cut pieces of foam weather stripping.

Step 6
Press weather stripping into place
Press the weather stripping into place, either along the stops of the window or the door.

Apply weather stripping on a day when the temperature is about 50 degrees to ensure that the strips will stick.

Step 7
Add door sweep
Add a door sweep to the bottom of the door. Cut it to size, and screw into place to secure it so that the bottom touches the floor. Now relax knowing that your house is sealed and your energy use is more efficient.
