Whether you're new to college dormitory life or are an upperclassman, you can benefit from the tips in Howcast's video series on college dorm life.

You Will Need

  • Resealable plastic bags
  • Small bottles and cans
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Condiment limitations

Steps

  1. Step 1

    Shrink food items

Buy small water bottles and soda cans and repackage other items in resealable bags.

  2. Limit the number of warm bottles or cans you place in the fridge at one time -- too many can overwork the motor.

  3. Step 2

    Remove shelves

Remove shelves to gain a few extra inches for larger items, or stack smaller items to maximize space.

  4. Step 3

    Stay clear of frozen foods

Stay clear of frozen foods. Mini fridges don't stay cold enough and frozen foods may melt.

  5. Step 4

Stock up on fruits and vegetables

Stock up on the fruits and vegetables. They can be eaten raw and don't easily spoil if the temperature should rise.

  6. Avoid buying things that need a lot of preparation or cooking.

  7. Step 5

    Limit condiments

Limit the number of condiments you have and only stock what you plan on using.

  8. Before electric refrigerators, iceboxes required huge blocks of ice to be delivered daily in order to keep food cold.
